Family-Based Petitions
A family-based petition refers to a process in which a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) sponsors a family member for immigration to the United States. This sponsorship allows eligible family members to obtain a U.S. immigrant visa and become lawful permanent residents.
Employment Authorization Document
An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) is issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), allowing non-U.S. citizens to work legally in the United States for a specific period. It is commonly referred to as a work permit.
Naturalization
Naturalization is the legal process by which a foreign citizen or national can acquire the citizenship or nationality of a country where they were not born. It involves a series of steps and requirements that an individual must fulfill to become a full-fledged citizen of a new country. The specific procedures and criteria for naturalization can vary from one country to another, but common elements are found in many naturalization processes.
Green Card
Adjustment of status is a process that allows specific individuals to apply for lawful permanent resident status (green card) while they are physically present in the United States. This process is an alternative to obtaining an immigrant visa through consular processing outside the United States. Adjustment of status is typically available to individuals who are already in the U.S. and meet specific eligibility criteria.
Fiancé Visa
The K-1 fiancé(e) visa allows the foreign fiancé of a U.S. citizen to come to the U.S. and get married within 90 days. It’s a nonimmigrant visa, which means it allows for a temporary stay in the U.S., not permanent residency.
Removal of Conditions
The removal of conditions refers to the process by which certain conditional residents in the United States can apply to remove the conditions from their permanent resident status. This typically applies to individuals who obtained a two-year conditional green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Asylum
Asylum is a protection granted by a country to foreign nationals who have fled their home country due to persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution based on race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion. Asylum seekers seek safety and protection in another country, where they apply for asylum status to avoid deportation back to their home country.
Deportation Removal Defense
Deportation Removal Defense refers to the legal strategies and actions taken to help individuals facing deportation (also known as removal) from a country. This legal defense prevents an individual from being forcibly removed from a country by immigration authorities.
